NeonMice™ Care

Housing

  • NeonMice™ are all male, and usually male mice are bad companions, however since they are all neutered they have a much calmer demeanor than normal male mice.  As such, you can house multiple NeonMice™ in the same setup without aggression problems.
  • NeonMice™ can be housed with females or 'normal' mice as they will socialize well with each other.  Note that there is no risk of pregnancy when housed with females as all NeonMice™ are sterile.
  • We recommend you keep 3 to 4 NeonMice™ in a typical 10 gallon aquarium with a wire lid.  This ensures they will will not escape.  There should be about 1-3 inches of bedding.  We recommend using aspen shavings, CareFresh™, corn cob, or compressed paper pellets for bedding.  Do NOT use pine or cedar shavings as the oils can cause respiratory problems with any mice.
  • We also recommend giving your NeonMice™ items such as cardboard tubes for them to chew on, and a wheel for exercise.  The exercise wheels without wire rungs are best so their tail doesn't get caught while running.  You can also include other toys or hiding boxes for them, which are much appreciated.
  • Plastic Playhouses, which are typically designed for hamsters, also work well.  You may need to add branches to the tubes to help the mice climb up steep slopes.
  • Wire cages intended for ferrets or hamsters may allow your NeonMice™ to escape through the large holes in the bars.  Remember, if the hole is large enough for their head to fit through, they will find a way to wiggle the rest of their body through as well!

Diet

  • Mice are healthiest when fed a rodent specific diet in block or pellet form such as Teklad™ Global Rodent Diet.  They also enjoy fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts as treats.  If you overfeed them with too many nuts they may become overweight, so watch the excess.

  • Never give your NeonMice™ chocolate, corn, candy, junk food, peanuts, cabbage, uncooked onions or beans.

  • Fresh, clean water should always be presented to mice.  This is best served with a water bottle strapped to the side of the tank.  We recommend avoiding bowls of water, as they tend to dirty up the water quite quickly.

General Care

  • You should commit to weekly cleanings to ensure a healthy environment for your NeonMice™.  You should start by removing and completely replacing dirty bedding and wipe down the inside of the cage with any household cleaner.  Ensure it is fully dry before refilling with fresh bedding to prevent it from absorbing chemical odor.

  • NeonMice™ love to chew on dog biscuits or chew toys in order to avoid dental problems.

  • NeonMice™ can be removed from their cage by picking them up at the BASE of the tail and gently lift them up into your hand.

  • Did you know that you can tame your mice to sit in your hand or on your shoulder? Start by feeding your mice treats; once they’re comfortable accepting treats from your hand, you can gently pick them up. Talk softly to them, too, and let them get used to your voice. Gradually increase these sessions as your pets get used to being handled.

  • Once your mice are hand-tamed, you can let them out of the cage for supervised exercise everyday. We recommend a small, secured area where you pets can’t get stuck behind furniture or chew on electrical wires.

Veterinary Care

  • If you see any of the following signs take your NeonMice™ to the veterinarian: sneezing, difficulty breathing, weight loss, general lethargy, or sneezing.

  • NeonMice™ can also get external parasites such as mites or lice.  When in doubt, visit the veterinarian to get the proper diagnosis.

  • Remember-NeonMice™ need the exact same care as normal mice!
